X-43a Top Speed - The "Mach number" is named after the Austrian physicist Ernst Mach. Mach 1 is the speed of sound, about 760 miles per hour at sea level. An airplane less than Mach 1 is traveling at the speed of sound, faster than Mach 1 is supersonic speed and Mach 2 is twice the speed of sound.

In March 2004, the X-43A set the previous record of Mach 6.8 (nearly 5,000 mph). The US Air Force's SR-71 airlifter can reach speeds above Mach 3.2. The X-43A has more than double, and triple, the top speed of the jet-powered SR-71.
The Hyper-X project is ready for its biggest challenge yet - the X-43A will fly a "scramjet" that can travel up to 10 times the speed of sound.
The third and final X-43A hypersonic scramjet research vehicle took to the skies today on a captive flight.
